Hannah Fuller took a deep breath to steady her nerves. He knew this session was important to her. She tried to duck Dr. Lewis's sympathetic blue eyes as he cleared his throat. "How much longer do you want to give him?" he asked.
She recalled how her husband slipped out early while she pretended to sleep. It occurred to her a reminder might have been wise. Then again, she brought it up to him three times yesterday and at least once a day before then.
Hannah took a sip of water, wishing she could exchange it for wine. A dry merlot might calm her insides down. She scowled at the clock on the wall that told her he was twenty minutes late and counting.
"I think it's clear he's not coming," she said before pulling a silver compact out of her purse.
"Would you like to reschedule?" he asked.
"I don't know that it would do any good,” she said, frowning at her reflection.
No wrinkles yet, but she really needed some rest. Concealer could only do so much. Nevertheless, she found a small pot deep
inside her makeup bag and dabbed some underneath her eyes.
“Clearly I'm not a priority."
Craig had to rush out of town at the last minute right before their first appointment. Hannah never fully
understood the purpose of that excursion. He came from a long line of stubborn men who considered
therapy a weakness and God forbid the therapist was female. She selected a male psychologist with and
Ivy League pedigree.
"Thank you," she said. "I'm sorry to have wasted your time."
"Hannah. . ." he began. “Let’s reschedule for next week.”
She grabbed her purse and headed for the door. Hurt, angry, and embarrassed, she deflected his request.
His office walls were closing in on her and her breathing sped up in a way that scared her. Panic attacks
were nothing new, but she hadn’t had one in six months. There was only one place she could go that
would calm her.
